Description

Light of Coco is a 3D puzzle platformer, played as a feline star creature named Coco. Light of Coco is a story about love, lonelines, hardship and determination. Coco has the most adorable, angelic meows. Use her voice to ask your butterfly companions to assist you with activating totems, opening doors, clearing ruble, lifting/carrying items, and so on. Aside from basic movement, you will have to rely on always having a butterfly around you to interact with the puzzles. Your butterfly companions might get attacked, trapped or injured. It is your duty to keep them out of danger and use Coco's voice to shoo away any hostiles. Her voice has healing abilities and can help out those in need.

History

Me and my friends try to participate in local game jams as much as we can. We are from New Zealand, so we joined the Game Jam Aotearoa 2021 event. We called our team "Manojo", using the first 2 letters of each of our names (Mason, Norbert, John). During this event, we have been given 48 hours to create a game that matched the specified theme. The given theme was "Light and Dark". Nearing the deadline, we submitted the game and got our much-needed sleep. Throughout the next few days, we posted our game in our Discord servers, social media accounts, sent to our friends and asked everyone to vote for us in hopes of winning the people's choice award. Spoiler: we actually won! This was a huge confidence boost for all of us, knowing that our game had all of this support

In 2022, we continued the development. Throughout the next 3 years, we applied to funds such as NZ Film Comission Interactive Media fund and CODE national Funding Programme, but with no luck. One of the reasons for our project being rejected was due to global economic conditions and poor sales data for the genre of our game. Needless to say this shattered our team's confidence and motivation to keep working on the project. We had to cut some corners, scale everything down, and push through to finish a somewhat polished, full version.
